Fraudulent Loan Application + Zero Help With Identity Theft

Prosper - Fraudulent Loan Application + Zero Help With Identity Theft

DO NOT USE PROSPER.

I never applied for any loan, never checked rates, and never created an account with them.

On June 26, 2026 someone used my stolen personal information to fraudulently apply for a loan (Reference FIC001B58). When I contacted Prosper to report identity theft and demand they remove all records, they completely ignored me.

Instead of helping, they sent me completely irrelevant automated responses about "opt-out requests" and privacy laws that had nothing to do with fraud.

This company had a massive data breach in 2025, yet they still can't handle basic identity theft cases.

Their customer service is useless and they clearly don't care about protecting people's data.

Prosper is a serious risk. Stay away from this company.

User's recommendation: Do not use prosper

  • - Prosper data breach exposed SSNs, credit-score access was offered, reviewer says their credit was adversely affected and a 2K loan was denied.

Earlier this year, I received an email from Prosper that there had been a massive data breach and millions of SS#'s and myriad personal information had been leaked. To compensate for their Bush League security system, they offered those affected unlimited access to their credit scores and reports for a limited period of time.

In my view, particularly because my credit was ADVERSELY affected as a result, I thought TOO LITTLE, WAY TOO LATE.

We had a tragic death in my family - a young person lost his battle with leukemia. That particular branch of our family has few resources - and they're too proud to start a GoFundMe. I requested a 2K loan from Prosper - which I could pay off in record time. But since TIME is essential, I applied and was denied.

They are the nastiest, niggardly and arrogant institution extant.

But I believe in karma and I foresee the perfect storm brewing for them. If I am right, it's just desserts - they should be ASHAMED of themselves for the breach and the affront of offering barely nothing in compensation.

I will get the loan -of that I am certain - but what goes around, as I often say in these circumstances, will bite them and woe betide their shareholders - all ten of them. A thoroughly disgusting and HEARTLESS institution - refer to the quote above.

Pros:
  • Cater to people with impeccable credit
Cons:
  • Data breaches will ruin impeccable credit

Preferred solution: Apology

User's recommendation: If you like arrogant bankers who treat people like dirt, open an account

What does a data breach have to do with your loan being denied?

Jonathan Yod

Your point is well-taken. I suppose my larger point and grievance is that this company should have done much more to those affected by this breach. I DID get a loan, by the way, but I've been receiving checks from Amazon, AT&T, among others, for their own misdeeds - Prosper should have done MUCH more and that is the general tenor of my complaint.

Coda: The loan came from Chase, not from Prosper. By the way, I don't bite, but remaining anonymous is your perogative.

LOL...You act as if you're receiving huge checks that no one else did. Like everyone else who joined, you received a pittance of a check from a class action lawsuit.

You're probably the type of "man" who join every class action and is also a professional P I T A who loves to pad their complaints with useless facts that have nothing to do with the complaint. L A M E

No response back. Call customer service took my information then hug up on me! Unbelievable.

No resolved.

Original review Dec 06, 2024
I took out a short term loan from Prosper. I used them for a previous loan 10 years ago.

I paid this loan off in less than 6 months and was due a refund for an over payment. I contacted Prosper to find out where my refund was and they said it had been sent to my bank from a loan I had 10 years ago. I called customer service and told them that the bank account I used for my loan I had 10 years ago was closed. I asked them why they did not send it to my credit union.

I was told the closed bank account was the only one they had on file. I told customer service that was just false as I had several payments taken out of my credit union on the current loan. I asked them to cancel the transaction and either refund the money to my credit union or send me a check. After a week with no response, I sent an email requesting a supervisor review my complaint.

A week later, I received an email requesting I call customer service so they can call the bank because the nearly $1000 they sent to the bank had not been returned to them. What? Are you insane? These idiots sent money to a closed account and can't seem to cancel a transaction they initiated.

Now they want me to contact the bank? Either these people are complete idiots or brazen criminals. I have to sue these *** to get money I am owed. Do not use them.

You will regret it. This is the poorest financial company I have ever dealt with and I could get better customer service from a tree stump.

Horrible service, poor credit line amount. Block card for ZERO reason

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Card blocked without consent.
  • - A $50 recurring payment triggered an alert.
  • - A $43.90 transaction was denied.
  • - There are no perks and high interest.
Original review updated Oct 16, 2024

Do not accept the card, this is the ABSOLUTE WORST!!!

Blocked my card without my consent for "security concerns" I had a $50 transaction that trigger an alert??? These are RECURRING payments (month to month).

One of the transactions ($43.90) HUGE AMOUNT, RIGHT?

DENIED!!!

The card always being paid on time, never late, perfect credit.

No proper English communication.

Hang up on my asking why a hold is there.

Never raised the credit limit, ever!!! they said is automatic, and reviewed!!

No perks, ZERO incentives

Astronomical interest rates

NEVER AGAIN !!!

Pros:
  • Easy approval
Cons:
  • Unreliable
  • High interest rates
  • Very high fees

Preferred solution: A proper explanation from an ENGLISH-speaking EXECUTIVE for why placing a hold RECURRING payments of $50!!!!! and no credit increase after years of great payment history.

User's recommendation: DO NOT ACCEPT THIS CARD, YOU WILL REGRET IT

Horrible In A Hardship

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - I tried hardship help but was told only option is a full payment.
  • - 90 days behind, penalties require $700, and other cards offer hardship programs.

The minute I couldn't pay due to health and job issues, I called to see if there was anything I could do. They told me The only thing I could do was make my payment.

I paid as much as I could and continue to get behind. They send out these emails that say.Call us if you're experiencing a financial hardship and we'll help you which gives you.Hope that you can make it through this time. Then when you call customer service they let you know, there are no hardship programs. There are no chances for you to get caught back up.The only option is to make a full payment. I'm now 90 days behind and, with penalties and fees, I have to make a seven hundred dollar payment to become current.

That's including small payments that i've made along the way. I have a lot of credit cards And this is the only one that refused to help me at all. I've gone through the hardship Programs that were available with the other credit cards and they are all now current.

It's the first time I've ever ran into a financial problem like this. I'm grateful for the other credit cards that offered me a manageable answer during recovery.

Pros:
  • Larger limit than most rebuilding credit cards
Cons:
  • No hardship program options

Preferred solution: I'd like them to follow the Industry standard and have a hardship program option available for economic catastrophes to help people get back on track.

User's recommendation: Avoid

To apply for a personal loan

AI Highlights
  • - I was pre-approved for a $7500 debt-consolidation loan.
  • - I asked for $8500 and was denied.
  • - A hard inquiry was added to my credit report.

Very disappointed. I was lead to believe I was getting a loan ( for debt consolidation) after speaking to representative, she told me I was pre-approved for a $7500.00 after I told her I was looking for a $8500.00 loan, after filling out further documents I was denied with no reason as to why. And added a hard inquiry to my credit report.

Pros:
  • Easy application
Cons:
  • Not straight forward

Preferred solution: Honesty

User's recommendation: Beware of “pre approved “ offers, side inquiries are not a guarantee to approved loan

Poor service. loan cancelled. no personal decision making. annual incomes don't always verify. you should be asking the consumer for more information.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - The app shows annual income and omits base pay.
  • - Request more info and allow loan re-evaluation if income verification cancels a loan.

your app says annual income. it doesn't say base pay.

it doesn't say additional income you would like to include. for someone who is credit worthy and works alot of overtime.

you should be asking the customer for more info not canceling and suspending their opportunity to apply again. you should have someone that can re evaluate a loan especially if it is cancelled based on verification of income.

Bad Experience with the Prosper Credit Card

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Account was hacked and scammers withdrew money.
  • - Applying for this card required banking info.
  • - I had to cancel and replace the card within a year.

Account was constantly hacked and money stolen by scammers. When you apply for this credit card you have to give them your banking information.

I had to cancel the card once and get a new one in less than a year. Someone was constantly hacking my account and money was being withdrawn from my checking account and purchases were made.

I have ended up paying several hundred dollars for items purchased by scammers so I have now closed the account and am paying off the credit card. It's great to help rebuild your credit in the beginning but this is an account that someone will constantly ***

User's recommendation: Do NOT apply for this credit card.
